Man Carl where does the time fly? It seems like yesterday that I was the biggest Gil Whitney fan and then suddenly comes along this new young weather guy for Channel 2. I think you and Gil were and for you are the best weather people anywhere in the country. Gonna miss you for sure and watching the weather will not be the same. Hope you get out and enjoy yourself with the family. Oh well, hopefully, it’ll be a busy severe weather season this Spring-Summer and we’ll still get to see you now and then. But you leave us in capable hands with Brian,Jamie and Erick.
Thanks for the memories……..And watch out for Bucher ..I’m sure he has something sneaky planned for your retirement.
I am so sorry to see you go, but sure hope you enjoy your retirement. You can look back and pat your shoulder for a job very well down. The Miami Valley lost its best known weatherman.
For Carl’s retirement, I think you should travel to the gulf states in the spring, Arizona in the summer, Minnesota in the fall and Alaska in the winter. And enjoy the weather that comes your way!!!
I will miss working with Carl on a daily basis, but I can’t wait to work with you again during major Weather events.
Love ya Carl!!
Michael Bell Storm Team 2 Weather Checker.
I have been watching you cover the weather since my parents and myself moved to the Dayton area in 1977, yes I was also here through the blizzard of 1978. I was 6 years old when I first watched you cover the weather for this area and now 31 years later I still watch you.
I feel like I am losing a member of my family. I am going to miss watching you every weeknight. You deserve to enjoy your grandkids. You are one of the top weather people in my opinion in this area.
I commented earlier but a memory just popped in my head and I had to share! Who knows HOW IN THE WORLD I remember this but back in the 80’s channel 2 had some kind of catchy slogan (that part I can’t remember exactly!) During the news they would have clips of different people all over the Miami Valley saying this slogan going into or coming out of commercial break. Well once I remember Carl’s wife doing that spot from her school libray right as Carl was coming on to do the weather. I’m thinking it was his birthday or something. Anyway, it caught him so off guard and it’s the only time I’ve ever seen Carl turn RED! Do you remember that Carl?? Pretty funny, and again I have no idea after all these years why that sticks out in my mind!
Thanks again for everything, Carl!

Carl,
Tv 2 news has always ruled in my house. I trust no one other than you, Carl, when it comes to the weather. I can’t believe it can be time for you to retire. I hope you have a long, healthy and happy retirement!!
At our house, whenever we wanted to know what the weather was going to do, it was always:”let’s see what Carl says”…we just have always trusted Carl’s forecasts and knew we could depend on his word…it just won’t be the same without his familiar face and voice!! We wish you well, Carl!!
Hey Carl it has been great having you here, I have been watching you since you took over for Bob Breck. You have brought so many inovations to the weather scene in dayton no other station has been able to keep up. you and your team have been the most reliable and accurate meteorologists I have seen, I hope you enjoy your retirement, you deserve it. I will miss seeing you on the air, but I will know with the team you have assembled your legacy will always be seen in their work. You all are a bunch of TRUE PROFESSIONALS, and I am glad I was here to witness the Carl Nichols ERA in dayton T.V. Thank You
Carl,
Congratulations! You are an outstanding forecaster. I was an Air Force meteorologist and you out-forecasted my colleagues and me many times! Have a happy and healthy retirement. You will truly be missed.
Carl: As a farming family we rely on the weather – it is either our best friend or our worst enemy. We found throughout the years we could count on your forecasts being right on the money. You will be missed, but you are leaving good meteorologists to take your place. You picked good professional people to work with you. You deserve to have many years of doing what you want, when you want. Enjoy a happy, healthy retirement. Keep a smile in your heart! YOU WILL BE MISSED!!!
Carl: Sorry to see you leave. You have been a part of our family for many years. We always knew we could rely on what your forecast said. Enjoy, you deserve the very best!!!!
Mr. Nichols,
I’ve grown up watching you on WDTN. When I was home sick from school in Kindergarten, I remember watching you and Omar Williams on the Noon news. When I got to high school, it was a pleasure to assist your wife in the Library, and a huge moment when you came to the school to speak. I felt so honored to know that you came just to talk to us. Thank you for your kindness. I hope that you and your wife will be able to enjoy this time together. Watching WDTN will not be the same without you. Thank you for all of your service to our community. Thank you for never using scare tactics on the air. Thank you for being a calming influence during frightening times.
God bless you, Bernice, and your entire family. May you find the time to relax and reflect, and then go on to find something that you want to do to keep you busy!
Carl,
I want to give you a BIG thanks & Congratulations, I have a lot of choices of meteorologist to watch here in Richmond, from Indy to Cincy to Dayton & I have found from early on that I could always depend on you & your forecast.
Thanks for including Richmond in your forecast when Indy stations didn’t. You have become part of this family & we will miss you very much.
Carl,
Thank you for not getting complacent about the weather. You always gave us the total picture. Some people complained how the weather guys paniced everyone, but if they weren’t informed they would complain even louder. You never took any weather data for granted and that’s why we were always ready for what came our way. Again thank you for your diligence and unselfishness toward your viewers.
That said,…I would like to invite you out for lunch. Please visit the Miami Valley Career Technology center’s on-site restaurant THE CULINARY CAFE operated by our culinary arts students. I would be honored to have you as my guest. Please call me at 937 854-8078 to make arrangements.
God bless and take care,

Congratulations for a dedicated career of service to the public! I remember when you started way back in the days of Bob Breck. I’ve always had more than a casual interest in the weather, and I always felt you and the TV 2 team were not just the most accurate, but also that you really cared about the people you helping. You’ve groomed a fantastic team of equally talented and caring people in Brian, Jamie, and Eric. Just the mix of your personalities alone is often entertaining and just plain fun to watch and enjoy! I hope you come back from time to time. Enjoy your family and retirement! You’ve earned it!
Thank you, Carl, for the many years of dependable forecasts. I wish you many healthy and happy years of retirement. You have achieved the No Day Work Week — Enjoy!

Dear Carl,
Thank you for your many yrs of sending the weather our way.
We retired in 2001, bought a motor home and traveled this wonderful country, visiting large and small towns and after each local weather forecast, our comments to each other was always, “Well, he is no Carl Nichols”…we always missed your forecasts when we were on the road.
Congratulations and best wishs for a fun filled, happy retirement.
Congratulations on a wonderful career! And thank you for your many personal contributions to making Dayton a better place to live, work and play. Your support for the Carl’s Coats for Kids Campaign, as well as other events like the Preble County Celebrity Waiters Auctions, has been amazing. You’ve touched so many lives in the Dayton region, through each newscast and through each philanthropic activity you’ve been a part of. Thanks for setting such a wonderful example for other members of our community, and thank you for so many years of service. You will be GREATLY missed!

Carl, I just want to let you know how much I’ll miss seeing you. In 1994, my husband (who was in the Air Force) and I were transferred to Colorado Springs. I was so homesick and when I was feeling especially blue, I would call Dayton’s time and temperature just so I could hear you give that day’s weather. You brought a little bit of home to me when I needed it the most. Congratulations! I wish you well in your retirement.
One of the main reasons I started watching Channel 2 News thirty years some years ago was because of you, Carl Nichols. You have always done a thorough and professional job. Being a teacher I was always listening to see if you would say weather we would possibly have a “snow” day or not. The majority of the time you were right. I also enjoyed the special programing you had when there was severe weather in the area. Thank you for all those years of excellent forecasting. You will be missed!!!
Sincerely,

PS Ironically, two of my teacher friends and I who watch you will be retiring this year also after 35 years of teaching.
Carl,as you prepare to retire today, you may think,”I can be replaced”, but that is not true! No one as good at his job as you have been can ever be truly replaced! You’re “one of a kind” and we have always appreciated the fact that, when we needed weather info, we could just turn on channel 2 and you would be on the job. Alss, your integrity and genuine-ness of character has always shown through your performance. Thanks so much and ENJOY the rest to come.

To a good person:
Carl Nichols,
The weather forcasts that you gave over the years has been outstanding. You are one of the many reasons I turned most of my ‘TV News Time’ to view. I would sometimes turn to the other stations for weather reporting and would compare notes, for after the fact, to see who was the most accurate forecaster. I must honestly say that you won easily, without any reservation on my part, and I would always take your side if I had any reservations whatsoever as to the weather forecast.
I would also like to say a great thanks, for being the M.C. for the many Banquets that we had in behalf of the Hamvention’s that we hosted at the Hara Arena, especially the times when I was the president of the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA).
We will miss you on TV Carl, but I am sure we will see you from time-to-time, helping wherever, and whenever you can, for the many functions that you were involved with over the years.
You have been a big part of everyone’s “weather decisions” thru the years. I have always maintained if “Carl says it, it is so!!” You are leaving us in comfortable hands and even so we will miss your smiling face and forcasts and thank you for all you have meant to each and every one of us!!! Enjoy your retirement but “don’t sit still” keep moving!!!
I have not only relied on Carl Nichols’ daily forecasts, but have been known to quote them to others when the weather suddenly turned severe–“Carl said we could get…”
To Mr. Nichols I say ‘may the chilly wind always be at your back.’
God bless!
I have been a loyal viewer of Carl Nichols for many, many years. When I saw the announcement on the news the other day of his retirement, I let out such a yelp, my husband came running because he thought something was wrong with me! When you have watched WDTN for as long as we have, you start to feel like the newscasters are like family. I have always trusted WDTN’s forecast over the other stations, especially in severe weather situations. Carl has always been a trusted “family member” and will be greatly missed! However, I am happy for him and wish him the best. Hopefully, he will still make an occasional appearance and let us know how he is doing. God speed, Carl!
Congrats Carl,
You’ve been my weather man all my adult life. You have put together an excellant weather team. Plus the reporters put the up close and personnel touch when the weather is bad.
Its sad to see you go…but retirement will be great for you.
Best to you and your family!!
Carl, I remember when you came to Channel 2. I think you are the best and I always trusted your weather forecast. I will miss seeing you but wish you the best in your retirement. Thanks for doing a great job all these years. You will definitely be missed. Best of everything to you and your family.
I don’t want to make you feel “old”, but I feel like we’ve grown “old” together. I remember when I was back in my 20’s and you helped cover the terrible winter weather. I feel like you led us all through it. Thanks!
Thanks for 30+ years of great service – may you have, at least, another 30+ years of an equally great retirement. Enjoy whatever!
Enjoy every day of your retirement. You deserve it. We have always enjoyed your weather reports. Hope we can still see you at the UD basketball games.

Thanks!
