is there any resources available to fully explain medicare benefits. my best friends father had a stroke in december and is coming home from a transitional care nursing home tomorrow. we are experiencing alot of problems getting questions answered concerning durable medical equipment qualifications. he is paralizied on the left side and is basically wheelchair bound. we have called medicare on numerous occasions to determine what durable medical equipment he will be eligible for and cannot get a straight answer. the only answers we receive are read from medicares websight. when more specific answers are needed they just put you on hold and still only give vague answers. the nursing home staff did a home evaluation to determine what equipment they recommend, however the staff has no idea what medicare will or will not cover. i find this unacceptable. if they are in the business of sending people home should they not know what medicare will or will not cover. then there is the approved medicare equipment provider. they are not providing much more help. one of our problems is that he really needs a motorized wheelchair, however we are being told that it can take 3 to 4 months before we will get an answer from medicare wether or not it will be approved, and if medicare provides a manual chair then he will be unable to get a power chair, they will only pay for one. what are you supposed to do in the mean time. its not like we have thousands of dollars to purchase everyting we need. today we found out that since we received a patient lift, since it takes two people to transfer him, and that the lift is considered a mobility device, medicare may not pay for a wheelchair at all since they only approve one mobility device. how is anyone suppossed to know what to do. you rely on the social worker from the nursing home to help you transition a patient for home care and they basically have no training for medicare benefits. its hard enough trying to figure out how to provide 24 hour care for your loved one while working and relying on family and friends to help let alone trying to find answers on what exactly medicare will or will not cover. what is a family supposed to do? who can we contact to get our questions answered? we assumed that the nursing home knew what they were doing and would help us obtain the equipment we desparately need. i can only imagine how many people are in the same situation we are in and have no idea how to obtain the information they desperately need.

I am looking to be a voice for other women like myself concerning the Mirena birth control.

I gave birth to my second child in September of 2007. 8 weeks later, by the recommendation of my OBGYN, I had the Mirena inserted. The next few days I experienced extreme pain and went for a check. They “could not find it” and ordered more tests. The conclusions of the test were “the Mirena is not exactly where we would like for it to be, but it is fine. You cannot get pregnant.” Without going into details, my body went through intense and unhealthy pains and discomforts for nine months. Within the nine months, I called my dr to report these adverse effects, and they told me to just be patient for a few more months because “my body just needed more time to adjust.” Finally, in July of 2008, I demanded it be removed. But they could not find it. X-rays finally showed the Mirena device sitting on top of my uterus, rather than inside of it. I had to have it surgically removed. We believe the initial pains after insertion were when the Mirena actually exited my uterus. I went nine months with the Mirena device releasing hormones into my entire body rather in the seclusion of my uterus alone.

After months of online research, I discovered that there are countless cases just like mine! I even have a friend of mine with the exact same situation as mine. Mirena and doctors tell the public that 1 in 1000 women experience uterine perforation. Well, in my case alone, I know three people (including myself) who have had the Mirena and two of those three have experienced perforation. That is over 60%.

In the cases I personally know about (my friend and I), the common denominators were #1. we were both less than 12 weeks postpardum, and #2. we were both actively nursing. Both conditions present a delicate, contracting, healing uterus. Of which, I believe, should not be given the Mirena.

I became pregnant very quickly and successfully with both my children. But, recently became preganant for the first time since the Mirena was removed and experienced a miscarriage.

Now, why am I sharing all of this? Because someone needs to be a voice. Mirena, of course, has all of their legal grounds covered, so their petty warning of uterine perforation with such a supposed “small” risk is very quickly overlooked. I called the FDA and reported my case. But who knows how many other cases like mine and my friend’s have gone unreported? How many other postpardum, nursing moms, desperate to give their bodies a break from pregnancy for a while, will hastily turn to Mirena only to encounter the same experience as I?

Mirena is very successful in many women. But I believe there is a link between too early postpardum and breasfeeding mothers and the increased risk of uterine perforation. I believe doctors and the public should be notified of this risk and I believe Mirena and doctors need to be more cautious in the distribution of Mirena before 12 weeks postpardum.

Someone needs to research this more and someone needs to get this message out in the open.

    Thank you.

  3. /Wow! I am sorry to hear that you had to experience all that unnecessary pain & emotional distress. I don’t trust doctors very much for those same type issues. The manufacturer seem to say whatever they need to say to FDA (in the “black box” warning) to get the drug on the market as soon as possible. It’s all about money & statistics. Thank you for sharing that information so I can pass it on to other young ladies. I don’t trust the Gardisil vaccine either. All of a sudden, it must be done to prevent this & that. Yea right. If I had a pre-teen daughter, I definitely wouldn’t have it done to her. The government dictates to us women when we need what and how we should get it. Making laws for abortion even. That is a womans’ choice. That is her business. She has to live with whatever decision she makes.

  4. We are attempting to get all small business on N. Main Street to get together for the purpose of establishing an ‘association’ to help beautify & clean up N Main St. We want our N Main St businesses to come together so that we can keep them in the City of Dayton with residential, citizen support. We like our City and we like our neighborhood. We do not enjoy hearing news stating we are a dying, dirty, and crime-ridden city. We are refusing to buy into that vision. We even have newsletters distributed throughtout the FROC Priority Bd neighborhoods to inform our neighbors of what is really going on each month. We accentuate the positive.

I am thankful for WDTN staff for doing what they do & for this site. They do a great job!! They have great personalities to boot.

I thought it might be interesting and a benefit to all your viewers if someone at your station investigated the possibility of identity theft via fake “wrong numbers”. Here is what happened to me today. The phone rang and I looked at the caller I.D. All I saw was an area code (no name). Since it happened to be my sister’s area code, I impulsively (and stupidly) picked it up. The man on the other line asked if I was “Bunny ______” (I can’t remember the last name but it was clearly made up). I said, “no, you have the wrong number”. Instead of apologizing and hanging up (which is what people usually do in such a case), he said, “you aren’t Bunny ________?” — as if I didn’t know my own name!!! Actually, I became VERY suspicious at this point and it seemed like he was either trying to keep me on the phone for some reason or was running some type of electronic scam at any rate. I said “no I’m not” and then he finally said “okay, I’m sorry” or something like that. I went to the highlighted call on my caller I.D. and tried to call them back only to receive an operator’s voice saying the number was no longer in service. The interesting thing is I was just about to pay some bills electronically over the phone. As you might know, this requires punching in your checking acct. number, your credit card number and sometimes other personal info. such as your ss#. I was so paranoid after this suspicious call, however, that I paid my bills online (not much more secure :) ha! ha!) Anyway, I would like to know if anyone has ever heard of such a scam and if thieves can somehow electronically tap into your phone line not only to hear what goes on but also to register the digits that you tap. With all the people who pay bills over the phone, it would be one more way to steal others’ money and their identity. Plus, with the technology that exists, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if such a thing was possible. Lastly, I would like to know what one should do if this has happened to them. Thanks so much for any info. or tips you can provide.

Women of the Air Force Band Reunite, Perform their Last Public Concert

Dayton, OH – Dayton-area resident Donna R. Morgan was a member of the Women of the Air Force (WAF) Band from 1952 to 1954. She and women veterans from across the United States have gathered in the Greater Dayton area to rehearse and play a public concert. These women were part of a unique and exceptional chapter in US Air Force history. Created in 1951, the Women in the Air Force (WAF) Band played hundreds of concerts and personal appearances as part of public outreach until it was disbanded in1961. Since 1998, the WAF Band has been holding yearly reunions and playing public concerts. This year, the WAF Band has chosen Dayton as the place where they will play their last public concert: Thursday, April 30, at 7:00pm at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 3939 Stonebridge Road, Dayton, Ohio.

The Band’s numbers tonight will include such favorites as America, the Beautiful, American Red Cross March, Lassus Trombone, other marches, show tunes and other favorites appropriate for young and old alike. The WAF Band’s performance personnel concert will once again prove definitively that patriotism never gets old and WAF Band members simply defy age.

About the Women’s Air Force Band
Conducted by Captain MaryBelle J. Nissly, the Women’s Air Force Band was one of the few places women could perform as professional musicians. During its ten year history, 235 women played with the Band, with approximately 50 women musicians comprising the band at any given time. They performed in countless parades and concerts for the pleasure of thousands of music lovers who had the opportunity to hear the all-woman band. The WAF Band holds the unique position of being the only all-woman former military band still performing publicly today. Among their other firsts include the first women’s band to march in a Presidential Inauguration and the first women to receive parachute training at Lackland Air Force Base.

In 1997, WAF band members began a series of reunions, each in a different location of the United States. Archives of the WAF Band’s history were collected by Dixie Johnson, the first President of the band. These archives are now available to those interested in women’s military/band history at the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe/Harvard Universities.

I have noticed that clark county (Springfield) area has had several stories of child endangerment recently. It seemed odd to me that so many of these charges have taken spiked over the last two weeks. Then another story has come out that the state of Ohio will possibly cut funding for a child abuse program. Sheriff Gene Kelly was in Columbus this week to try and help keep the funding from being cut. So it makes me wonder if all these recent charges have just been a public relations stunt to bring attention to this program. Are all these charges as bad as they say? I have personly spoke to a family that has accused of such charges, and they report that the detective on the scene dumped out trah cans all over the floor and then took pictures of the mess like it had been that way before they entered. After all the real facts were gathered, some officals have recomended the charges are recomended to be droped. Child abuse and or neglect is a horrible thing and should be a high priority, however we need to make sure we charge the defendants based on relible sources, and evidence. Lets make sure our community makes a case and not just the evening news.

Baby Boom- you bet there is.

We are expecting a ‘hurricane baby’ from the September windstorm. We are due with #6 on June 15th. Last night, I went into Miami Valley and was admitted into the LAST BED THEY HAD. For the first time I ever, I was sent home with active contractions 3-4 minutes apart and Im dilated to 3. They said to come back when my contractions were closer. With this being baby #6, we were shocked to be leaving the hospital. They are simply too busy and booked! It will be very interesting for someone to review the birth statistics of June’s baby boom with the Miami Valleys hospitals.
Due to miami valley hospital being so full, we do not plan to return back there later tonight or tomorrow when our baby should arrive. It’s kind of scary to know they are simply too busy because there are so many babies!

I need some help, I am on section 8 and have been for awhile. Never had any problems until this year, and now it seems like they are on going. Its already bad enough that you have to feel guilty for acceppting help from the system, then they make you feel even worse with the way they treat you when you try to have things resolved. Its been so stressful knowing that I have done nothing wrong and trying to get them to help fix the problems they have created. I have held the same job position for years, not much has changed my income status at all. I have personaly went to GREENE METROPOLITAN HOUSING AUTHORITY numerous times and waited for more than an hour to speak with my caseworker who is always less than friendly and makes it her duty to have you feel smaller than you already feel walking through their doors, knowing shes the one who has messed my case up in a huge way, and still refuses not to own up to all her mistakes. I have called everyday basically with no returned calls, went to the highest ranks also with no returned calls, what else can I do. I’m a single mother of two just trying to make it and with the way the economy is it is hard enough without ignorant people like her making it even harder. Im tired of getting no where with the system. Im not the only one who complains about green met.I just seem to be the only one who would love to get things fixed with their system and the way they run things in that place. People should not be made to feel guilty for needing the help. I have always done everything I was told to do, always turned in every appropriate form that needed turned in, Ive always complied with their agreements, and still go through nothing but torture with these people. I am not the one who made the mistakes they are, but Im goin to be the one who takes the fall for it, and I know Im not the only one they have done this too. This is suppose to be a government run program, well if thats so, why isnt the goverment doing something about the people they have running their programs. I have been waiting now for well over a year just to get a status update on my case, everyone else seems to get information on my case before I do, so whats the problem here???I have been told so many different things it is unbelievable. When I went up there just last week and asked their receptionist to take a look at my case, they still had their PROBLEM they created posted as my status update, she was shocked to see that I had the form proving that what was in her system was wrong, which my case worker herself had signed, then when I fnally after a couple hours got to see my case worker, I was treated coldly like I had done something wrong, when I brought the letter, which is the only letter I have received in a year, to her attention she was dumb founded and acted as though in shock, and had to be reminded that she was the one who had hand given it to me and personally signed herself?? yet claims that she put another letter in the mail to myself the day before which claims my status changed in APRIL of 2009, and when I went in last wednesday if Im correct the month was JULY HELLLOOOOO, now im going to take all the heartache of not knowing the status of my case til then, which i can say, I still have not received that letter she claims to have mailed out to me the day before. She also admitted to me and in front of a witness I had taken with me that day, that she had jst mailed that letter out to me which would have been tuesday july 8th, on a change in my case that supposedly occured in april of 2009. Now that Im taking the backlash of her mistakes, it seems no one wants to take my calls and im going through so much over this caseworker not doing her job, or not caring enough to admit she messed up and fix her problem. Instead to save her own but it looks like ill be the one to take the fall for her ignorance… How fair is that!! I have spoken to an attorney who has said that I have an obvious case against them, but who these days even has the money to do that, and if i had th money for an attorney I wouldnt need the help from green met. I have also contacted my state representative, who is by the way also interested. I would love nothing more than to be able to take myself off this assistance, but it is hard with 2 kids, Im working, and would love nothing more than to be able to do his on my own, i just want my case fixed. Please Help!!

At around 4:00 pm on Monday July 13th, my boston terrier got loose on old troy pike, in Huber Heights. All because the meter reader once again left my privacy fence gate wide open. I went searching for him for 5 hrs till i decided someone must’ve took him in. So i make flyers to hang up all over Huber. When i turn one in to the speedway on chambersburg/old troy pike, the attendant informs me some guy picked up my dog around 5 claiming hed take care of him until someone came looking. so the attendant took down his name and humber. I call him and describe my dog, he asks if there is some kind of reward for this dog… I say not at this moment, because i dont have my purse or wallet on me… im walking around hanging up flyers.. So he says he doesnt know what he can do then and hangs up on me. I turn in his info to the police… they leave him a message that only angers him to call me at 6 am cussing me out screaming… saying f*** you, your not getting your f***ing dog back and hangs up yet again. I call police again…. there is now a detective working on it because this is now felony theft.(dog cost over $500) ….Whats the world coming to? people stealing pets now for reward??? This dog is a child to me. I just want my family back and im still shocked something like this could happen in my community. My dog is a 6 yr old boston terrier. black and white, brindle in the black. only one black patch over his eye instead of the typical two patches. his name is Jasper. Very friendly beautiful dog. Please contact me by email or phone 937-270-3287 if you have any info or seen this dog. Or if you know anything about the jerk that stole him. His name is Mike Smith. , 45-50 yr old black make supposedly residing in the Trotwood area. If you have any info at all please contact me.
