The ups and downs of Spring!

March 15th, 2009 at 9:31 pm by Erik Zarnitz under Weather

While we are still a week or so away from Spring.  It looks like this week we will see more of the same, a taste of Spring for a few days… then colder temperatures.  Take a look at this jet stream map posted below.

The jet stream is a river of air up around 30,000 feet up.  This stream bends like a wave as storm systems ride along it.  When the jetstream is to our south… colder air can move down from the north;  when it is to our north, warmer air can move up from the south; and when it changes… we could have stormy weather.  This week we will have a few changes.  The map posted above shows the jetstream to our north… helping our temperatures to warm as we head through the first half of the week.

Wednesday night a cold front will push through, giving us a shot for some storms… and the cooler weather returns for a few days.  The nice thing about this time of year… is that cold air visits to the Miami Valley get shorter and shorter.  This cold air visit will last only a few days before warmer weather builds back in by the second half of next weekend.

While forecasts change generally the overall trend tends to hold… and this one shows a nice warm up for early next week.  While this week (with the exception of Wednesday evening) looks pretty quiet, as we head closer to the end of the month and temperatures begin to warm into the 70s our severe weather chances shoot up as well.

    Dear WDTN,

I know that Carl Nichols is retired, but I never had the pleasure of having him lecture to any of my classes. I’m sure that Carl is still busy, even in his retirement, but I would love to have him talk to my classes sometime. I hope he sees this post!
