Hello, Friday… hello 80s!

We’re in for a BIG warm-up today, as temperatures soar this afternoon!  A warm front is moving through the area this morning:

Temperatures are already rising.  When I came into work this morning at 4am, we were at 57 degrees… and as I write this, we’ve climbed to 59.  The coldest hour of the day is typically just after sunrise.  Why?  Well, to put it simply… there is a lag.  The Earth is always receiving radiant heat from space and returning it to space.  (Most of this heat obviously comes from the sun.)  So we gain most of our heat during the day… and lose most of it at night.  As the sun rises, the portion of the Earth that is just beginning to receive the sun’s rays is still in the process of losing heat!  It takes a little time to reverse this trend… and because the sun angle is so low at sunrise, that is typically the coldest time of the day.

There are exceptions, of course… on a day like today, where we have Warm Air Advection (WAA) going on.  That is just the movement of a warm airmass into a region… which is why temperatures are rising!  It looks like a very summerlike day… and weekend… with highs in the 80s.  Hold onto your hats, though… it will be a bit windy.

Dry weather is forecast for today and Saturday… but there could be an isolated thunderstorm north of Dayton on Sunday.  A cold front will be sagging into the region:

The good news, that front will never really get to Dayton, as it lifts back NORTH as a warm front Sunday afternoon…

… which will keep us with unseasonably warm weather into the beginning of next week!

Enjoy your weekend!
Jamie
