Chilly fall weather is here!

October 14th, 2009 at 8:16 am by Jamie Jarosik under Weather

Get ready for the chilliest (is that a word?) stretch of the fall season. Temperatures will only be in the 40s for highs the next few days, with lows dipping into the mid-30s.  We’ll also remain quite unsettled.  Here is what’s happening… we’re in a northwest flow aloft… that will keep us cool:

And also, note the little “vort maxes” or areas of maximum vorticity that will move through the flow, keeping us with a chance of rain (these are the yellow areas, with x’s).  The rain is spreading through most of the Miami Valley this morning.  I’ve even had a report of some small ice pellets mixing in up in Tipp City!

It looks like we’ll stick with a pretty steady rain through early afternoon.  Then later today, there will be a drier period (although a shower is still possible at any time).  Our highs today will almost be 20-degrees below normal!

Thursday and Friday will also be quite chilly and unsettled.  Friday night into Saturday morning, we could even see a few wet snowflakes mixing in with the rain… yikes!

As of 10:25 this morning, you can add the New Carlisle area to the list of communities getting small ice pellets mixing in with the light rain. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It makes you wonder, what kind of a Winter are we really in for :/? Have a great Wednesday and stay warm. :)

We also had ice ice pellets in Covington, Ohio. I say let it snow, let it snow!!

Michael, my husband saw on either MSNBC or CNN that this winter is predicted to be the coldest in over 100 years for the entire country. Not sure how accurate the prediction is but we will soon find out! I love snow but do not enjoy bitter cold temperatures.

Jamie, have you heard anything about this winter’s predictions?

  4. Andrew says:

Aimee, I hope that’s true. If anything it would just make the season a little more interesting.

Aimee, there are conflicting winter forecasts at this point… check out this story: http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/video/Conflicting_winter_forecasts
I do believe NOAA will issue their updated forecast today. Personally, I believe the winter weather pattern is still setting up… will have my own mind made up in November! :)

Thanks for that link Jamie! We4ll I can’t wait to see what NOAA forecasts and I will be interested to hear your predictions as well. I am a weather nut, I lived in Florida for 14 years and have been through my share of hurricanes. I love wild weather, a good thunderstorm and tons of snow! In the three winters I’ve spent in Ohio, I have yet to see a lot of snow, hopefully this year we get a few more inches.
