And day three makes a heat wave…July 17th, 2013 at 7:49 am by Jamie Jarosik under Weather
Monday’s high was 91 degrees. Yesterday we reached 93. Today we will be back up in the lower 90s, and that will make it an official heat wave here in the Miami Valley! And why stop there… these conditions will continue right through the end of the week.
To go along with the heat we have the humidity. And THAT is what makes the situation dangerous. When dew points are high, the air has a high moisture-content… and evaporation is slowed significantly. Sweating is our body’s way to cool us off… as evaporation is a cooling process. BUT the sweat won’t evaporate efficiently into a muggy airmass. So it puts stress on us physically to stay cool. THIS makes it feel even HOTTER… thus, the heat index, or “feels like” temperature. Today, it will feel like 100-degrees as we reach peak heating this afternoon, and for that reason a Heat Advisory is in effect for all of the Miami Valley from noon through 8pm:
As discussed yesterday, a heat advisory is issued by the National Weather Service when the heat index is expected to be between 100 and 104 degrees. We also have an Excessive Heat Watch in effect for Montgomery County for Thursday, and could see another advisory–or even a warning–issued before the end of the week. “Beat the heat, check the backseat…”
Relief is coming Saturday, as a cold front moves through. Best rain chance still looks like morning/early afternoon… then a drop in temperature and humidity! Sunday looks great!
