A stalled boundary is still the focus for our cloud cover and scattered showers this weekend. We’ll continue to see the clouds this evening. There’s a slight chance for a few scattered showers. As of 6pm there are a few showers and thunderstorms in the southern half of the Miami Valley. Be sure to head to wdtn.com to get the latest scan of Live Doppler 2HD.

Despite the cloud cover this afternoon we did see our highs in the middle 70′s which is a few degrees above normal.

This evening we’ll see a slight chance for a few showers and storms to develop. But they are going to be very isolated in nature.

None of the storms that develop will be severe – however out west it’s a different story. There are tornado watches in effect as a large storm system produces severe weather there.

Back here in the Miami Valley we’ll see more clouds heading into Sunday. A little bit of sun may spark a few showers and storms in the afternoon but again they will be isolated in nature.

One thing you’ll notice – and probably noticed today – is an increase in humidity. Dew point values are in the lower 60′s so it feels slightly sticky. However Sunday dew point values will rise into the middle and upper 60′s which means it’s going to feel a bit more uncomfortable.

Monday looks like it will be the warmest day of the week with highs in the middle to upper 80′s. Temperatures stay in the lower 80′s for the first half of the work week but right now it looks like the Memorial Day weekend may be dry!

Have a great weekend!

I have decided today is my “pick day of the week.” It’s going to feel more like summer rather than spring. We’ll see gusty winds at times near 30 mph which will allow our temperatures to soar into the middle 80′s.

While temperatures will be well above normal it doesn’t look like we’re going to break a record.

We’ll see lots of sunshine for the first half of the day. By the afternoon clouds begin to build and there’s a chance for a few showers or thundershowers. A cold front will sink southward and bring the chance for rain mainly after 6pm.

The cold front stalls right over the Miami Valley and this means our rain chances will continue for Thursday.

The rain chances continue into the weekend and much of next week.

There will be some dry times but most of the days will have scattered showers and storms. Be prepared to keep the umbrella nearby

The clouds hung around a little longer than anticipated and that had an impact on today’s highs. We only hit 55 degrees thanks to all of the cloud cover. Our normal high for this time of year is near 70. The below normal temperatures will continue for the next two days. But we will see more sunshine for Sunday and Monday.

Tonight a weak cold front will pass through the area. This will bring a very thin line of light showers.

The showers will move east after 10pm and skies will become partly cloudy overnight. Temperatures will drop into the upper 30′s and lower 40′s again by early Sunday morning.

We’ll see some sunshine for Sunday afternoon but highs will still stay in the middle 50′s.

The chilly air mass stick around as high pressure gets closer to the Miami Valley Sunday night. Temperatures will drop into the middle 30′s by early Monday morning. This means if you have planted your garden you may need to cover up your plants or bring them indoors.

The good news is warmer temperatures will head this way for the new work week. Look for lots of sunshine and temperatures into the upper 70′s and near 80 on Wednesday!

Happy Mother’s Day!

There is a pesky low pressure area in the upper levels of the atmosphere and it is a slow mover. This is the same system that brought chilly temperatures to Chicago and snow to Wisconsin. Now it’s in southern Missouri and will slowly move eastward.

This storm system gave us a bit more clouds today and temperatures a few degrees cooler than yesterday. But still we’re near normal.

Tonight the rain will stay to the west of the Miami Valley. But it will slowly creep northward late in the day tomorrow.

Temperatures will start out once again in the lower 50′s.

By Sunday afternoon we’ll see a bit more clouds across the area. Temperatures will stay in the upper 60′s close to 70. There’s a slight chance for a few showers to develop but mainly south of Dayton and later in the afternoon/evening. This will be from the area of low pressure that will slowly pivot bands of rain northward.

As the low pressure area finally moves eastward there’s still a slight chance for a few showers Monday.

Temperatures continue to rise for most of the work week with highs in the lower 70′s.

Hopefully you got out and enjoyed the first part of the weekend. Clouds have already thickened across the area and rain chances will increase later tonight. We did see highs today slightly above normal.

This is all thanks to an area of low pressure heading near the Miami Valley later this weekend. Clouds have increased and will stick around for the rest of the weekend.

Look for showers to develop later tonight and continue through the overnight hours.

By Sunday morning the showers will be scattered in nature. It won’t be a complete washout but you may run into a few showers from time to time.

By Sunday night and Monday morning the storm system heads east of us and eventually our rain chances decrease. There’s a slight chance for a few isolated showers early Monday but only around a 30% chance.

The rest of the workweek looks mainly dry with above normal temperatures. Highs in the middle 70′s are possible for Tuesday and Wednesday.

After a warm and windy day we’re tracking storms out to the west of the Miami Valley. Right now as of 7pm there are no watches or warnings in effect for the area and no warnings with the line in central Indiana.

The latest discussion from the Storm Prediction Center says that the watch will likely be dropped early to the west and another one will not be issued farther west.

Here’s the latest look from our future trac forecast model that we run in house here at WDTN. Like we’ve been saying yesterday and this morning the line will likely reach the Indiana/Ohio state line by 10 or 11pm

The main threat with these thunderstorms will be gusty winds at times and moderate to heavy rain. We may see wind gusts with some of these thunderstorms near 40-50 mph. There may also be some localized minor flooding due to seeing so much rain all at once. The moderate to heavy rain will continue through the Friday morning rush hour but will quickly move east of the area by lunchtime.

Temperatures will fall throughout the day. We’ll see our highs early on Friday into the 50′s the fall into the 40′s for the afternoon with breezy westerly winds.

High pressure takes over for the weekend. This means lots of sunshine but cooler temperatures.

Lows will be in the 30′s Saturday and Sunday morning and highs will stay in the 50′s for the afternoon.

We’ve seen an active weather pattern the last few days and it will finally come to an end as a strong cold front moves through tomorrow night.

Today we saw the warm front lift northward. Most of the northern half of the Miami Valley stayed in the 60′s for the afternoon while the southern and central portions jumped into the lower 70′s. You can see where the warm front set up – north of it highs were only in the 50′s while south of it temperatures soared into the middle 70′s and even 80′s.

As of Wednesday evening there are some severe storms firing in northern Illinois and Indiana. Those are going to lift north of the Miami Valley. So tonight we’re going to be dry but tomorrow night is a different story.

First out ahead of the cold front tomorrow we’ll see VERY windy conditions. Sustained winds will be near 10-20 mph but wind gusts will reach 30-35 mph. Here’s a look at one of our computer models is suggesting what the sustained wind speeds will be.

These strong winds will bring warm air northward. Temperatures tomorrow will soar into the upper 70′s close to 80 degrees.

With all of the warm air and energy in the upper levels of the atmosphere thunderstorms are going to flare up to our west. By the early evening strong thunderstorms will form in northern Illinois and Indiana again. This time (unlike tonight) they will form a large line and head eastward.

Some of the storms within this line will be on the stronger side. The Storm Prediction Center has the Miami Valley in an elevated risk of severe weather. Keep in mind – *most* of the day on Thursday will be dry. This line of storms will move through after 11pm Thursday.

The one thing we have to watch is timing. The line of storms will be moving through after the sun has set and we’ll lose the daytime heating. On the other hand there is a lot of energy in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Basically we have to watch and see if the storms hang onto their strength as they move eastward or if they will weaken before they get here.

It’s a good idea to make sure your NOAA Weather Radio is plugged in and ready to go. Meteorologist Jamie Jarosik and I will be watching this closely. She’ll have the latest computer model trends tomorrow morning on 2News Today.

Be safe!

Did you enjoy today’s weather? Temperatures are on the rise not only for the weekend but for much of next week as well. We will see more cloud cover and several chances for rain next week but there will be some sunny moments.

Around 5pm today we saw temperatures soar into the middle 60′s which is above normal and about 15 degrees warmer than what we had yesterday.

A warm front has lifted northward and with it more high level clouds too. We’ll see those clouds stick around tonight. Temperatures won’t fall too much either. Lows by tomorrow morning will be in the 50′s. A big difference from the 30′s we saw this morning .

Temperatures continue to rise for the next couple of days. We’ll see highs in the lower 70′s for much of next week. However we’ll be in an active weather pattern. This means several chances for rain and lots of clouds. One of two cold fronts this week moves through late Monday night and early Tuesday. Most of Monday will be dry, breezy and warm.

The cold front gets closer to the Miami Valley late Monday night and this means our rain chances will increase. Rain will be likely by Tuesday morning. The air behind this cold front isn’t all that cold so we’ll continue to see temperatures in the 70′s for the rest of the week.

A stronger cold front moves through the area Thursday night. Behind this front there is a big difference in the temperatures. Highs will drop back into the 50′s for the end of the week and next weekend.

There’s a bit of a buzz about our chances for seeing the Northern Lights tonight. It is a little unusual for auroras to be seen this far south in Ohio however space scientists suggest the solar energy that will hit the Earth tonight is going to be rather strong.

The chance for us to see auroras stems back to Thursday when a coronal mass ejection (CME) or solar flare left the sun. Click here to see a video of the CME. Now it takes a couple of days for this solar energy to travel through space and get close to the Earth. When the electrically charged particles head into the Earth’s atmosphere they collide with other gas particles and we see the brilliant colors dancing across the sky.

Now I want to point out we are on the southern fringe of the line. There’s a chance we may not see them this far south. If you want to take a look tonight find a dark spot, away from any city lights, look up and be patient. From the research I did it appears that the energy should reach the Earth’s atmosphere sometime after 9 pm eastern. I did find a service through NOAA that provides email alerts. Click here to see the site. If you happen to catch the northern lights please remember to send a photo using our report!t feature at wdtn.com

Now the question becomes will the clouds clear out across the Miami Valley…yes I think they will just in time. Clouds are beginning to break up right now and we’ll continue to see the clear throughout much of the overnight. There will be an increase in clouds by Sunday morning. This batch will be due to a warm front heading this way.

This warm front will bring us VERY warm temperatures again for Sunday afternoon and much of next week as well. Look for breezy winds during the afternoon and some sunshine. Those winds will help boost our temperatures into the upper 60′s which is about 10 degrees above normal.

Most of Sunday will be dry however there’s a slight chance for a few isolated showers Monday. But the warm weather continues for most of the week.

Temperatures soar ahead of the cold front but once the cold front gets closer our rain chances also increase.

Finally the front gets a little closer to use on Tuesday. This means a much better chance for rain Tuesday.

Have a wonderful weekend!!

So it’s Friday and like many people I am pumped for the weekend! I hope the weather forecast is making you excited too. I’ve been talking about a warm up all week for the weekend and here it is. First today – high pressure builds across the area bringing lots of sunshine to the area. We’ll see temperatures into the low to middle 50′s which is a few degrees below normal for this time of year.

Tonight will be chilly once again with lows near the freezing mark. But this will likely be the last chilly night at least for the next 7 days.

A warm front will lift northward on Saturday. This means warmer temperatures will head into the Miami Valley for the afternoon. Skies will be partly cloudy but the one thing you’ll notice will be the winds. They’ll be sustained at 10-15 miles per hour but may gust to near 20.

The cold front gets closer on Sunday and that means a chance for showers. The rain threat could come as early as Sunday morning.

We’re going to see more rain chances for next week as a well as warmer temperatures. And by warmer I mean 70′s!

Temperatures climb into the 70′s for Tuesday and Wednesday but we’ll see showers and thunderstorms possible with all of the warmer air.

Have a wonderful weekend!
